Nordic Competition (NIFA)

Competition for new Nordic shorts. The films compete for four NIFA-awards, along with the films in the section Norwegian Competition.

• Submission deadline: December 1, 2010 - CLOSED.
• Max running time: 30 minutes.
• Origin: The Nordic Countries*, except Norway.

All directors with accepted films will be invited.


How to participate:

Submission is CLOSED.

 

 

• NIFA (Nordic Independent Film Awards) are presented in four categories. Please note that the competition films in the Norwegian section also are eligible.

• NIFA Best Film: Trophy and EUR 1 000 donated by Fretex

• NIFA Best Fiction: Trophy and 5 reels of 35 mm film from Kodak Norge AS

• NIFA Best Documentary: Trophy

• NIFA Best Animation or Art Film: Trophy

• Honorable Mentions for up to three films.

 


Rules for participation in the Nordic Competition

Types: All categories of film can participate, except commercials.

Running time: Not more than 30 minutes.

Produced: After January 1, 2009, with a Nordic* director. Please note that Norwegian films should instead submit here >. Each particular film can only be submitted once.

Submission deadline: December 1, 2010.
a) If submitted through Reelport, the film and a still from the film must by then be completely uploaded and available for evaluation by the festival team.
b) If submitted directly, the Festival Office must by then have received the following material for each submitted film:
1) A DVD screener (English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish language version, marked with reference number, title and contact person).
2) A completed web submission form.
3) One still from the film (on a CD-R, or sent to e-mail: still@minimalen.com, marked with reference number)

Return of DVD screener: Will not be returned.

Selection: A preselection committee will consider each submitted film, and may do additional selection by invitation, up until the selection announcement date. A list of the selected films will be available on the festival's website no later than February 15, 2010. No reasoning for films turned down will be made public.

Screening copy/print: For selected films, the screening copy must be present at the festival office no later than February 25th. Masters are not accepted. The format of the screening copy can be film (35 mm) or video (PAL: Beta SP, DV/DVCam, DVD, or HD-file**). Note: English language version or subtitles is necessary.

Return of Screening copy: Within two weeks after the festival closure.

Awards: The organizers will nominate an international Award Jury of three members. The jury will award the following prizes to the film directors:
• NIFA Best Short
• NIFA Best Documentary
• NIFA Best Fiction
• NIFA Best Animation or Art Film
Note: The competing films in Norwegian Competition are eligible on equal terms.

Invitation and accreditation: All directors for elected films will be invited. One accreditation for each individual director, which is personal and non-transferable, and gives access to all of the events during Minimalen.

The Nordic Countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden - including Greenland, Faroe Islands, Åland.

* Definition of "film from a Nordic country"
a) The film has at least one citizen of a Nordic country credited as a director.
OR
b) The film is shot in one of the Nordic countries and has been produced or majority coproduced by a Nordic company, or is in receipt of at least 51% of its budget from Nordic sources. In the latter case, the film must also include sufficient creative elements from the Nordic country – having strong
Nordic-related subject matter.

** HD file:
The screening copy can be a Quicktime HD file with Codec Apple Prores 422 HQ (HD 1080p, 2 ch. audio).
