NORWEGIAN FILM- AND VIDEO ART 1990-2000

This is the fourth part of Minimalen's cooperation project with Atopia of screening Norwegian film art, decade by decade. We started in the 60s, now it's time to look at the 90s. This writing of history is largely a pioneering effort, and in this way history is both made and preserved. Minimalen appreciates highly the unique opportunity to make this work available, and gives the floor to the curator, Farhad Kalantary of Atopia.

Retrospective: Film & Video Art in Norway, 1990-2000

Atopia is proud to present this program of film and video works representative of the approaches and attitudes that artists brought to the moving image works in the 1990’s. 30 artists have contributed to this substantial program with 29 single-screen works. Some of them were young artists in the 90’s, fresh out of school, while others were established artists and educators of the practice. Remarkably they have all continued and flourished their engagement with the moving image in the following 20 to 30 years.

Atopia started this project more than seven years ago, during which artists' works were collected from around the country. Three exhibitions were organized in 2013 with Marianne Zamecznik, Natalie Hope O’Donnell and Per Kvist as invited curators. The current program owes much to their contribution and includes many of the works they had selected. This program is the culmination of Atopia’s work on the 90’s and it brings together a wide selection of artists and art works.

The program contains single screen short film and video works. Due to such limitations a number of important contributions to the moving image in that period made by artists such as Kjell Bjørgeengen, Kristin Bergaust, Lars Paalgard, Ingrid Book and Carina Hedén could not be included.

And last, but not least in the list of artists here we miss the presence of film and installation artist Ellen Trap-Meyer, who could not bear the burden of the 90’s. Ellen and her likes were the real heroes of that period.

We are very grateful to all the artists who have contributed to this long awaited project of Atopia. *

Curator & Contact: Atopia, Farhad Kalantary.

TALKING TO A STONE

[Laura Hudson, LFMC. Lux-katalog.]

Talking to a Stone uses cinema's dimension of time to explore decay in an urban landscape, accelerating the destruction around us through invisible human intervention. Everyday objects move from the weight of reality and become fragile, and we witness their extinction through frame-by-frame manipulation. Hansen uses cinema to take sculpture into the realm of time, where space and form can be manipulated into patterns, returning as Sisyphus to the beginning. [Laura Hudson, LFMC. Lux catalogue *]

MOTHER TONGUE

I’m sitting with my mouth against the camera lens. On the TV screen the mouth is shown making grimaces to the lens. I stick my tongue out against the camera, I don’t make language sounds. I’m turning my tongue around and points it at the camera. The mouth is gaping and showing teeth, smacking the teeth together, smiles widely, clucks out loud, pouting, whispering: «don’t be afraid, come closer, come!»

HIDE AND SEEK

Hide and Seek shows a pregnant woman’s belly button, cross cut to a breathing stomach. It starts slowly, before the belly button inverts back and forth, ever fastening, to the sound of heartbeats speeding up, in lock with the images. A body chases the other, or is it hunting itself? In the end everything becomes a riot, and in the last image one is swallowed by the belly button.

THE STORM

The Storm presents a person’s back, shoulders, neck and back of the head. He extends his arms over his head, almost swaying to a raging storm. The body is lighted and processed in the editing so that it more than anything looks like a desert landscape in the end, with tactile dunes changing and acquiescing to the forces around it.

UNTITLED PISSING

FLYING SHOES FOR A PRINCESS

Unforgetting was my first attempt to study everyday fear through film and explore the idea of its omnipresence. This 16mm film is about imbedded fear within the architectural space, and re-enacting fear in order to grasp it. At the same time it makes its own way of combining sound and image, and looks for a place between the narrative and the abstract. *

In the latter half of the 90s, there was a 'hash drought' in Oslo, which led many people to heavier substances. This changed the streetscape and there was a considerable increase in people swaying and falling on and in the streets. By placing a group of people swaying and falling in the same way as the junkies, but in blueberry fields, the balance was in some way restored.

EVERYDAY LIFE IN THE POST-UTOPIAN WELFARE STATE (THE RAIN)

A kaleidoscopic visual journey through the dense urban landscape of Hong Kong, in which the artist uses a variety of layering and image manipulation techniques to achieve a graphic visual quality with references to the tradition of oriental art. In the midst of the urban bustle, a Buddhist monk is a stark and compelling impelling image, like the still point at the center of the maelstrom. As with many electronic image works, which focus upon the environment, either urban or natural, this piece returns our attention to the changing status of humanity's relationship with its habitat. *

HARVEST

Harvest viser to eldre mennesker som spiser sammen i stillhet.

Harvest shows two old people eating together in determined silence. Stenseth filmed in an ‘amateur’ style: we see mixed lighting, slow motion and a grainy texture. The last adds a level of sensitivity to the video essay. The sound image consists of sampled twelfth-century music and the atmosphere it creates hangs intuitively together with the visual imagery. *

FLIP FILM

This trip through the urban landscape is a staccato peek at San Francisco from the inside of a bus. An animated flip book in the tradition of Biograph's 1890 film toy, the Mutoscope, this sixty-second film explores the reiterative process: it is a film of a flip-book of photographic stills from a film by a photographer and a filmmaker. *

AMOMENTUM

With Amomentum I wanted to visualize an ultimate presence, the actual moment of existence, when and where anything can occur, whether odds are high or low. Not an apocalypse, just a symbolic moment of universal order. Originally it was made as a loop, to go on forever until it is no more. *
