Japanese Indie Animation: CALF

Five independent and individually unique and innovative Japanese animators operate under the label CALF. They go far beyond animé, using animation techniques in an inventive mix criss-crossed by e.g. film photography, stop motion and drawing.

Tochka (Takeshi Nagata and Kazue Monno) has developed the animation technique Pika Pika, a combination of long exposure and stop motion. Thus, everyone can create animation by drawing with light in the air. Kei Oyama's style is highly original, with its collage of close-ups. Atsushi Wada create beautiful and poetic hand-drawn animation with very fine lines, and is on the soundtrack easily recognizable with its whispering sounds; a strange and absurd world full of humor and sadness. The films of Mirai Mizue are non-narrative and comparable to handdrawn visual symphonies. Shin Hashimoto uses liquid ink and smooth transitions from scene to scene, and burst with unpredictable and crazy elements that seemingly come out of nowhere.

We have the pleasure of having Tamaki Okamoto of Carte Blanche with us to introduce the programme. In addition to distributing the films, she is also the producer for the short that Atsushi Wada won the Silver Bear for in Berlin last year.

THE MECHANISM OF SPRING (Haruno Shikumi)

Everybody is excited to see the arrival of spring every year. We know that elation but we never try to dig into why it happens. This film tries to investigate the mechanics behind the excitement spring brings.

THE THAW (Yukidoke)

CONSULTATION ROOM (Shinsatsu Shitsu)

Using a collage of blown up shots of skin and a subtly wavering
stop-motion, this work makes us conscious of the fact that we
are simply bags of flesh.

MODERN NO. 2

Vi gikk for det uten å nøle. Vi har formet verden i en voldsom
fart. Hva er denne verdenen vi har skapt?

We went for it without any hesitation. We've formed the world at a quickening pace. What on earth is this world that we've created?

BELUGA

There used to be a girl who sold matches on the street. Despite suffering abysmal conditions in her daily life, she can't think of an alternative way. What she sees in her dreams is the same as what she experiences in her daily life. She cannot escape her karma and suffers.

HAND SOAP

A calm yet sultry animation about a family with a growing adolescent son. His insecurity, his obsession with his body and the ill-at-ease family are reflected in details and objects that occasionally lead a life of their own.

TATAMP

Hvert levende objekt har sin egen lyd. Lydene er mer varierte
når det er flere levende objekter. Det blir kaotisk, men samtidig melodisk.

Each living object has its own sound. The sounds are more varied when there are more living objects. It becomes chaotic, and at the same time melodic.

REBUILD

After the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, I was witnessing a lot of changes. Towns were lost in a moment.
Children living in Fukushima can not go out and play freely.
