The 38th Minimalen Short Film Festival proudly presents more than 250 unique world class films from Tuesday 13 to Sunday 18 of January 2026 at Nova Cinema and Cinemateket Trondheim.

• INT: International Competition
An exquisite selection of some of the very best films from the past year, from around the world outside the Nordic region.
(6 programmes, 36 films)

• NOR: Nordic Competition
A refined selection of key films from Norway and the Nordic countries from the past year.
(6 programmes, 46 films)

• Multiplié Dance Film
Two competitions for international and Nordic films respectively, featuring the powerful combination of dance and film – presented by DansiT.
(2 programmes, 21 films)

• Horror: Ramaskrik Presents
Short-form horror cinema curated by the country’s leading purveyors of fear. Enter if you dare!
(1 programme, 10 films)

• Short Docs
Discover the power of reality through the lens of short-form documentary filmmaking.
(1 programme, 4 films)

• Children and Youth
Barnimalen and Ung present films for young audiences, from the first years of primary school through upper secondary education.
(4 programmes, 23 films)

• Opening Screening
A festive opening event and the official kick-off of the 38th Minimalen, featuring regional films in collaboration with Midtnorsk Filmsenter and previews from the festival programme.

• Mid Nordic Panorama
A showcase of films from the central regions of Sweden and Norway.
(1 programme, 10 films)

• Regional Student Competition
Students from Norwegian regional film, TV, and animation programmes compete for the title of Best Student Film 2025.

• One-minute-films
(1 programme with 60 films from Norway in two competition categories)

 

 

• Suzannah Mirghani
A broad presentation of this influential auteur from the Global South.
Including Cotton Queen in cooperation with Kosmorama, and a Masterclass in collaboration with Kortfilmkonventet.
(2 programmes, 7 films)

• Mockumentary
A conscious play with the boundary between fact and fiction, made especially relevant by our time’s challenges with fake news and manipulative narratives.
(1 programme, 8 films)

• David Lynch
A rare insight into David Lynch’s singular universe – from early, raw short films foreshadowing a unique cinematic language, to the legacy of a director who forever shaped modern cinema with his dark, dreamlike visions.
(2 programmes, 12 films)

• Norwegian Film Art: Marianne Heske
A central figure in Norwegian contemporary art for six decades, and an early pioneer in the artistic exploration of film and video.
(1 programme, 10 films)

• Short Film Studies Symposium
Three essential French classics presented in the context of the journal Short Film Studies, presented by editor Cynthia Felando. The Red Balloon (1956) is screened here, with the two remaining films shown in the following programme. A vital boost for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the short film form.

• Canon: Vigo & Resnais
Screenings of the essential classics Zero for Conduct (1933) and Night and Fog (1956), discussed in the preceding Symposium.

• Kotzamani: What Mary Didn’t Know
When a Swedish family goes on a Mediterranean cruise, sweet romance intertwines with the magic of Greek myth. A medium-length film by our favourite Konstantina Kotzamani.

• Industry: Nordic Shorts Expo
Three days where filmmakers can meet buyers, distributors and representatives from major international festivals in a relaxed setting.

• Industry: Short Film Convention 2026
The 11th Short Film Convention will take place in Trondheim on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 January. Official programme and registration available (in Norwegian).
