NORWEGIAN FILM ART: MARTE AAS
Marte Aas (b. 1966 in Trondheim) is a Norwegian photographer
and film maker, based in Oslo. Aas’ main area of interest is the
intersection between contemporary image culture, technology and
landscape. Her work attempts to address underlying structures and
gestures that form political and ideological narratives. She is educated
from The School of Photography at The University of Gothenburg
and the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Aas has had a
number of solo exhibitions in Norway and abroad, her last major
exhibition was Space Grammar at The Centre of Photography in
Copenhagen, Denmark, 2018.
In this programme six films will be presented, demonstrating
different cinematic strategies and crossing genres, from
documentaries to fiction and the fertile grounds in between. More
films are available at our collaborator Kunsthall Trondheim.
Marte Aas has received several stipends and grants, such as the
Royal Caribbean Arts Grant in 2004 and her works has been
acquired by public and private collections such as the National
Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Kiasma-Museum of
Contemporary Art and Telenor Art Collection.

CINÉMA
Cinéma er en svart-hvitt 16-mm film om danseren Rukmini
Chatterjee. Filmen utforsker representasjons-problematikk
ved hjelp av sentrale elementer som blikk og gester.
Ved bruk av ulike sceniske virkemidler i filmen skapes en
forhandling mellom danseren og betrakteren.
Cinéma is a black and white 16 mm film showing the dancer
Rukmini Chatterjee. Via key elements such as gaze and gestures,
the film explores issues on the notion of representation. An act
of negotiation appears between the dancer and the viewer by
the scenic means of the film.

CITÉ EUROPE
Kjøpesenteret Cité Europe ligger utenfor Calais, i nærheten
av den franske terminalen til kanaltunnelen mellom
Storbritannia og Frankrike. Filmen Cité Europe viser oss den
mindre glamorøse baksiden av det fasjonable kjøpesentret
ved Schengens yttergrense.
The Cité Europe shopping center is located next to the French
terminal of the Channel Tunnel between France and the UK,
outside the city of Calais. In the film Cité Europe we are guided
through the outskirts of the shopping mall; the desolate backsides
and the hidden corners of the architecture located at the
Schengen border.

GRØNLAND-MAKEDONIEN
En film om bussrute 151, som har avgang fra Oslo bussterminal
på Grønland i Oslo sentrum og går til Makedonien
på Rykkin i Bærum. Filmens hovedperson er en ung kvinne
som i fraværet av noe bedre å gjøre tar denne bussen hver
dag.
A film about bus route 151, which departs from Oslo Bus Terminal,
located in the Grønland district of central Oslo and ends
at Makedonien at Rykkin, Bærum. The film’s protagonist is a
young woman who, in the absence of anything better to do,
catches this bus every day.

mellom været, naturmetaforer og vår digitale virkelighet.
Med utgangspunkt i Munchs ikoniske bilde Skrik, tar filmen
oss med på en spekulativ reisegjennom den infrastrukturen
vi tar mest for gitt; været.
I am the Weather investigates the connections between the
weather, methaphores and our digital reality. With Munch’s
iconic painting The Scream as a starting point, the film takes
us on a speculative journey through the infrastucture we take
most for granted; the weather.

LA DEFÉNSE
Med utgangspunkt i den moderne arkitekturen i finansområ̊det La Défense i Paris utforsker verket arkitekturens
ideologiske og pragmatiske effekter i byrommet. Fire
forskjellige historier uten klar begynnelse eller slutt veves
sammen i et forsøk på å visualisere ustabiliteten forbundet
med arkitektur, finans og menneskelige relasjoner.
Starting out with the modern architecture of the financial
district La Défense in Paris, the work explores the surrounding
architecture’s ideological and pragmatic effects in this cityscape.
Four different stories with no clear beginning or end are
woven together and seek to visualize the instabilities connected
to architecture, finance and relations.

ROBOTNIK (THE WORKER)
En polsk kvinne jobber som vaskedame i Oslo. Filmen
handler om utfordringene knyttet til arbeidsinnvandring
og klassetilhørighet, mens den også tar for seg enkelte stereotyper rundt polske arbeidsinnvandrere – ved å portrettere en av dem.
A Polish woman works as a cleaning lady in Oslo. The film
delves into the challenges linked to work migration and class
affiliation, while also trying to address certain stereotypes
about Polish migrant workers – by portraying one of them.

Kunsthall Trondheim will from January 17 to April 28 present the exhibition
Francine (was a machine) with the Norwegian photographer and film maker
Marte Aas to a broad public in collaboration with Minimalen.
Marte Aas has had a number of solo exhibitions in Norway and abroad. Her artistic
practice addresses underlying structures and gestures that form political and
ideological narratives, with a main area of interest in the intersection between
contemporary image culture, technology and landscape.
Kunsthall Trondheim is a new contemporary art institution with international
focus, and aims to strengthen the local art scene, and to be the central arena for
contemporary art in Trondheim city and the region of Trøndelag. In addition to
exhibitions, Kunsthall Trondheim’s program includes concerts, performances, film
screenings, lectures and readings.

AND WHAT I DON’T MISS ABOUT PEOPLE
En framtidsvisjon om en verden hvor menneskene er borte
og hvor en enslig hund beskriver hva hun savner og hva
hun ikke savner med menneskene. Hunden beveger seg
rundt i et øde steinlandskap og har av ukjente årsaker
bosatt seg der.
A vision of a future world where people are gone and where a
lone dog describes what she misses and what she does not miss
about people. The dog moves around in a deserted rock landscape
where she has settled for unknown reasons.

Filmen tar utgangspunkt i myten om filosofen René
Descartes og hans mekaniske datter for å undersøke hva
som skjer med vår selvforståelse og vårt verdensbilde
når teknologien gjør det mulig eller nødvendig å utslette
skillet mellom menneske og maskin.
The film takes the myth of the philosopher René Descartes and
his mechanical daughter as a point of departure to examine
what happens with our self-understanding and worldview
when technology makes it possible or necessary to erase the
division between man and machine.
