THIS MAGNIFICENT CAKE!
In this screening we have the pleasure of presenting one of this year’s most stunning animation films. The mid-length format makes it difficult to fit in anywhere, but when there is a new film from the filmmakers behind Oh Willy… (2012) - which charmed us utterly with its wooly aesthetic and endearing surreal story - we just have to make room. This Magnificent Cake! is an anthology film where each of the five main characters have their own chapter with their own narrative that, taken together, alludes to a much larger impressionistic story of the epoch in question. The filmmakers are based in Antwerp, Belgium. Marc James Roels is a live-action director, making award winning shorts Mompelaar (2007) and A Gentle Creature (2010). Emma De Swaef specializes in stop-motion and dollmaking, her preferred working materials include wool, felt and textile. In 2012, they made the short film Oh Willy… together, a stop-motion short that was selected for 300 festivals (incl. Minimalen in 2013) and won 80 international awards. |

Den forteller historier om 5 forskjellige karakterer: en konge med problemer, en middelaldrende pygmé som arbeider i et luksushotell, en mislykket forretningsmann på ekspedisjon, en bortkommen portier og en ung desertør. A mid-length animated anthology film set in colonial Africa in the late 19th century. It tells the stories of 5 different characters: a troubled king, a middle-aged Pygmy working in a luxury hotel, a failed businessman on an expedition, a lost porter, and a young army deserter.
